Pilot and Combat System Officer Opportunities

The Kentucky Air National Guard flies the C-130 Hercules aircraft. We believe we have the best aircrew of the entire Air National Guard and have the awards to prove it. Each year we have the opportunity to select individuals to attend Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) and Combat Systems Officer (CSO). This opportunity is open to all individuals who qualify.

Qualifications

  • Citizenship: Must submit proof of citizenship and be citizens of the United States
     
  • Age: Be eligible to attend training prior to 30th Birthday (selections are made a minimum of one year in advance)  No age waivers will be accepted.
     
  • Education: Bachelor's degree complete or will have completed by May of the next year. 
     
  • Physical: Pass an Air Force Flying Class I Physical (eyesight requirements - Uncorrected distance vision of 20/70 but correctable to 20/20 and uncorrected near vision of 20/30 but correctable to 20/20) and Air Force Flying Class IA Physical for CSO (eyesight requirements-Uncorrected distant vision of 20/200 but correctable to 20/20 and uncorrected near vision of 20/40 but correctable to 20/20)
  • AFOQT: Take the Air Force Officer Qualification Test (AFOQT). For UPT minimum acceptable scores are 15 Verbal, 10 Quantitative, 25 Pilot. For UNT minimum acceptable scores are 15 Verbal, 10 Quantitative, 25 Nav.
     
  • Other: Meet moral and ethical standards as determined by regulation. 
  • TBAS/BATS: TBAS based Pilot Candidate Selection Method (PCSM) Score. This may be taken at an Air Force ROTC Detachment

 

Training for Pilots: (Items may not necessarily be in that order)
 

 

  • Initial Flight Training - approximately 30 days - Pueblo, Colorado 
     
  • Medical Flight Screening ( 3 days at Wright Patterson AFB, OH)
     
  • Total Force Officer Training (TFOT) - 8 weeks at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama 
     
  • UPT - Phase I & II - 27 weeks (Vance AFB, OK; Laughlin AFB, TX; Columbus AFB, MS) May be one of three locations 
     
  • UPT - Phase III - 27 weeks at th e location of Phase I & II
     
  • C-130CIQ Initial Co-pilot Training - 10 weeks at Little Rock AFB, AR
     
  • C-130PMK Pilot Mission Qual - 10 weeks at Little Rock AFB, AR
     
  • Home Station Seasoning Training - 90 days here at the KYANG
     
  • Combat Survival Training - 3 weeks at Fairchild AFB, Washington
     
  • Water Survival Training - 3 days at Pensacola, FL
     

 

Training for Combat Systems Officer: (Items may not necessarily be in that order)
 

 

  • Total Force Officer Training (TFOT) - 8 weeks at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama
     
  • Initial Flight Screening  (IFS) - Pueblo, Colorado
  • Water Survival Training - 3 days at Pensacola, FL
  • Undergraduate CSO Training - 1 year at Pensacola, FL
  • Formal Training Unit (C-130)  - 6 months at Little Rock AFB, AR
  • Home Station Seasoning Training - 45 days here at the KYANG
     
  • Combat Survival Training - 3 weeks at Fairchild AFB, Washington 

 

 

Individuals interested in becoming a Pilot or Combat Systems Officer must submit the following items:

• Resume with cover letter
• Consolidated Certified College Transcript (Completed Baccalaureate degree or will have degree completed by May of the next year - letter from school stating you can complete your degree in that timeframe)
• Air Force Officer Qualification Test (AFOQT) Scores - Can be taken at university ROTC detachments, Active Duty Air Force Bases, Air National Guard Bases, or scheduled with KYANG
• Copy of Private Pilot's License (if applicable) & any additional FAA ratings
• Copy of Flying Training Log (if applicable)
• Personnel Report/RIP (if military)
• Up to last 5 Officer Performance Reports (if military)
• Up to last 3 Enlisted Performance Reports (if military)
• Basic Attributes Test Score (BATS) must be taken prior (can be set with any ROTC). UPT Applicants ONLY.
• Air Force Form 24, Application for Commission
• Letters of Recommendation
• Physical Profile: AF FM 422 or equivalent within the last 6 months with PULHES (Air Force members) or MEPS Physical (Non-Prior Service) or DD Form 2808/DD Form 2807 (Prior Service other services)
• Dress Guidelines for Board: Service Dress for military applicants; business attire for civilian applicants
